Iran to host 1st UN summit on dust storms in July

SANANDAJ, May 14 (MNA) – Iran’s Head of Department of Environment and VP Masoumeh Ebtekar said Tehran will host UN summit on dust storms in July.

Sand and dust storms mostly originated from hotspots in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and Central Asia are adversely affecting Iranian cities adjacent to the aforesaid areas and causing great discomfort for the poor dwellers.

Ebtekar told Mehr News correspondent on Saturday that the UN is organizing the first international summit to tackle and mitigate the dust storms.

Three years ago, she said, we met with Iraqi officials to discuss the matter, however the war and the following insatiability and the safety issues impeded efforts to resolve the issue.

Fortunately, VP added, it’s been two months that Baghdad has expressed readiness to counter the predicament and preliminary talks began last week to take first step to combat dust storms.

Pointing to other countries’ reactions over the issue, she said Iran raised the dust issue at the international level and the United Nations has offered four resolutions, so far.
